Denim Market Bag

Monday, January 4, 2010

I made this "market bag" as a gift this Christmas for my Dad.  I used a pattern from The New Handmade: Simple Sewing for Contemporary Style.  The outside is made from blue denim.  The bag has lots of special touches just for Dad.  Like this tag that I salvaged from one of my pairs of jeans:

And this outer pocket (with red Levi's tab) from the same pair of jeans:

And a washable vinyl inside in a yummy ice cream print:

The bag also has a solid bottom due to a piece of bookboard cut to fit and covered with matching vinyl.

Thank you both! My Dad loves ice cream, so I was really excited to find ice cream vinyl. It had pale pink and fuchsia in it so I had to do some creative cutting to keep it more manly.

I recently bought your book "the new Handmade" and I love it! It has inspired me and I'm so excited to try some of the patterns, especially the denim tote bag. I love the idea of using oil cloth for the lining or your idea of using clear vinyl over a cotton print cloth. What great gift ideas too!

Hi Van. I can't take credit for that book -- it isn't mine! But I did use a pattern from the New Handmade to create this market bag. I found the book very useful this past Christmas for sewing some lovely gifts.
